It is true that I grew up eating “idlis and dosas”, “pongal and Aappam with coconut milk”. It is mouth watering even now whenever I think about the traditional Indian food.
Indian food is not only known for its flavor but also for its ingredients. The turmeric, the ginger and the fenugreek and what not has its own healing and other health properties. But every time when I see people talking about eating healthy they end up promoting the food that they grew up with. Perhaps they are so used to the taste that they convince themselves and others it being “the best food in the world”.
But practically speaking, in today’s world, where women still being predominantly in charge of cooking and other household chores has to find a way to cook healthy and in a jiffy. Yes it is true that turmeric has anti inflammatory properties, so why don’t you just toss it in your crockpot with chicken and other ingredients to make some soup. If coconut milk is to be used then why not make a smoothie with some berries into it.
Few orators are recently promoting “idlis and aappams” big time. Honestly speaking, they are the ones who will be waiting at the breakfast table for their wives to serve those “idli sambar”. Women of today have career, passion, interests and lot more to achieve. If all they do is make “murukkus” and “gulab jamuns” then India would need feminism until the next generation or even longer.
I am not against traditional food, but making that every single day is cumbersome. But try and find a smart way to include those ingredients on fresh food and that will definitely do good to your health. Just sprinkle those cumin and fennel powder onto your baked veggies or meat if you don't have time to make currys. Juggling with kids, career and fitness goals are the women of today with a smile on her face saying that she is fine. She is the one who wakes up at 4am to hit the gym and tosses dishes into the dishwasher at 10pm. So I think she should be supported and if not atleast not frowned upon for making some out of the box food choices.
