Whom do you consider to be the most successful person?
Different people have different answers for the question posed. Just to name a few, Warren buffet, Barack
Obama, Mother Teresa and the list goes on. If you had noticed not one person
can be compared with another. Mr. Buffet is considered to be a witty investor,
President Obama is of course talked for holding the most powerful position in
the United States perhaps in the world and Mother Teresa is well known for her
prodigious acts of charity.
So what is success? Is it to be very wealthy or being able
to take care of the poor and needy? Some people have a clear cut choice while
others may have a blend of choices. For example, profit making companies engage
into corporate social responsibility activities. The Tata group of companies alias the Tatas is the classic example of developing communities along with
reaping profits.
As an individual we are often distorted by peer pressure and
other worldly influences to judge success appropriately. Most of us in fact all
of us at some point or the other must have faced with bizarre comments and
questions from peers, colleagues and even family. “Why didn't you get into IT
sector, it pays so well?” “Why are you into teaching profession when
you can be a successful banker?” “Are
you just a sales person?” That’s a
snapshot from the never ending list of questions coming from almost every
person we bump in our lives. The usual reaction would be to get confused whether
we are doing the right stuff or not. But in reality, the questions are actually
based not on your success but on the person’s personal opinion about success.
To put in simpler terms, if a person thinks that jobs paying high salary is the
best then they are the ones who pose the first two type of questions. In such
situations, if you think answering them is appropriate and worth your time then
do answer them firmly that this is what you like. Say that I have a passion in
teaching or writing and I don’t care how much it pays, I am not doing this for
money alone. And so is vice versa, if you think that making good amount of
money is crucial, say that I enjoy being a sales person making a huge chunk of
income in a short span of time and also climbing up the corporate ladder faster
than any other employee. To gain this confidence, one needs to be ethical. Your
activity should be synchronized with your personal goals and juncture. Why I
say juncture because lot of times we have to make decisions at a critical point
of time, choosing path A or path B. If you think that this is the best that you
can do under the given circumstance then you are definitely successful. I am
not saying that you should get complacent, but what’s wrong in acknowledging
your good work if you have put your best. To sum up, according to my experience
success is something that you do what you like under the given critical
conditions or juncture.
