No, this is not some spam message targeting stay at home mom that promises hefty dollar amount for just a data entry job. This is a proposed law in Germany in the year 2012. Germany's conservative coalition, led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, is planning to pay mothers who stay at home to care for their children.
Compared to United States and other countries, private day care and nannies are very much uncommon in Germany, mainly because of its cost. Also, there is a huge gap between demand and supply, especially in large cities like Berlin, Munich, or Hamburg, where parents scramble to register for daycare even before their child is born.
So they proposed a law to pay 150 euros a month to stay at home moms if they decide to raise children on their own without sending them to government funded day care between the ages of 1 to 3. This proposed law will be debated again in the month of August. The general maternity off system in Germany is very much favorable to child upbringing. Parents can take up to 3 years leave and still have their job guaranteed. The employer doesn’t pay any at this time, but parents are entitled to receive money from the government up to 14 months based on their previous salary. So the proposed law of 150 euros if sanctioned will go on top of that.
But critics say that government should channel their funding to increase the availability of government funded day care. Either way, Germany still scores high in child care laws when compared to US or may be even India.
