Yes it is true that not everyone is covered by employer provided health insurance. People who are self employed and those who are not covered by medicare, medicaid due to age or income factors are truly in distress.
The ACA aka Obamacare makes every single person to have health insurance otherwise face a fee. The law eliminates pre-existing conditions, the insurance companies cannot drop you if you are sick and also protects from gender discrimination. Sounds so upright, but has its own pitfalls causing the law look more absurd. The very first pro, that is making the insurance companies not to deny coverage in case of sickness is causing people to avoid insurance till the point they get sick. We have reached the 2014 deadline and sadly the demographics of the enrollees are more of the older age group. The youngsters especially one with no health issues are demotivated to buy health insurance. The next hitch is the wide coverage provided for all.For example a 4 year old getting a maternity coverage is of no sense.
All these issues add up to the costs for the insurance companies instead of bringing them down. So the very purpose of providing health care at reasonable rate is in a hassle.
